History of the Rotary Club of Kent
During our 2009-2010 year, as the club approaches our 90th anniversary, our club historian
Paul Wallace is sharing some stories from our club history each month. Click here to view all of the history stories.
1945 CELEBRATING
25 YEARS With great fanfare, including the publishing of a history by Arthur Babbitt of the first 25 years of the club,
members celebrated their silver anniversary, Tuesday, November 20, 1945 at the Kent Methodist Church. The Hon. Everett Dirksen,
then a congressman and war veteran from Illinois, spoke to the 220 present. Founder Paul Harris wrote "Greetings and congratulations
on your first twenty-five years and faith in the years to follow...The devotion of Rotarians to their cause is amazing. The
next twenty-five years will unearth new wonders, greater than ever heard or even dreamed of so here's to the better day."
1970 CELEBRATING
50 YEARS The 50th anniversary was held November 5, 1970 at the Silver Lake Country Club. Author James Michener was
the speaker. The November 6, 1970 Rotareminder featured a recapitulation of the first 50 years, highlighting the contributions
the club has made to its members, the Kent community, and to Rotary International through its sponsorship of new clubs in the district.
1995 CELEBRATING 75 YEARS Dick Eshler served as chairman of the 75th anniversary committee. The event was held on November 21, 1995 at the KSU Student Center Ballroom. The clubs we have sponsored sent representatives. It is anticipated the next celebration will be in 2010, the 90th year of the club.
